Oval Info

The oval has been in existence since 1990. For its first year, it was on Stuart Lake, but this proved unsatisfactory due to too many cracks developing. They now use the hockey rink zamboni for resurfacing.

They have held a triathlon (13 or 7 km ski, 9 km run and 3000 or 5000 m skate) every year since 1990.

For the 2005/06 season, the oval was changed from 333m to 400m and the rink was used to host the British Columbia WorkSafe Long Track Olympic Style and Mass Start Age Class Championships.

The lanes are 25 and 30 metre radius as per the SSC drawing in the red book. Contact Coach Keith Gordon kggordon@telus.net

Location and Oval Info 2010.01.03 update:

Fort St. John Enerplex Now Open for Long Track Speed skating!!

On Dec 23, 2009 members of the Fort S. John Elks Speed Skating Club were the first to put their blades on the ice in Canada's newest 400m indoor speed skating oval. Club members smiled from ear to ear as they skated the first few laps. The ice felt very fast. The facility is located at 9324-96 Street, the site of the original outdoor oval, where many of Canada's Olympians have competed in the past. The facility is located at an elevation of about 700 m above sea level. Due to conversion of the Richmond Oval after the 2010 Olympics to an indoor sports facility, the Fort St. John Enerplex will become Canada's second indoor speed skating oval. The first major competition to be held are the WorkSafe BC Provincial Long track Championships on January 23 and 24, 2010. The ice will be available until early April 2010 and put in again in late summer/early fall 2010, thus allowing for an approximate seven months skating season. The official opening of the Enerplex, which also houses 2 NHL size rinks and a 380 m running/walking track, will take place in the fall of 2010. Fort St. John is located in NE British Columbia and has daily air service to Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.

The club has been sending skaters to the Canadian LT Championship annually, and usually several medals make their way back to Prince George.

Oval Info The PG oval was moved to a new permanent location in fall 2007. The new site features secure fencing, enhanced lighting and a surface that is below the surrounding ground level with a 4 meter berm surrounding the oval. This has reduced the effect of wind and also created a cold sink which helped the ice conditions stay good during above freezing temperatures. Work continues toward the goal of a permanent refrigerated oval and support building at this site.
